DIY headlight Cleaning Methods

It’s easy to forget about your headlights when it comes time for your vehicle’s routine maintenance, but they need a good cleaning from time to time. Road debris and weather take their toll on the lenses after a while. You may want to try a couple of techniques to clean them yourself.

The first one works well on plastic headlights. Put some toothpaste on a warm damp cloth and simply scrub the lenses, repeating as necessary. When you’ve cleaned them, use a clean damp cloth to rinse them. You will be surprised at the difference this makes. Although the results are better with plastic, there’s no reason you can’t use it on glass.

An alternative for glass headlight renewal is sandpaper and polish. Using several sheets of sandpaper, each with a different grit size, work your way around each headlight. Begin with the coarsest grit, and very gently use it to remove scratches and blemishes. Continue the steps through the finest grit size. Complete the process with glass cleaner to polish. It’s an effective method to clean glass, but it also involves finesse.
